Elizabeth Taylor’s unique relationship with musicians

By Samyuktha Krishnappa | March 24, 2011 2:42 PM GMT

As fans remember the enchantress that was Elizabeth Taylor, tributes hailing all aspects of the actress continue to pour in. The Hollywood star, who passed away early Wednesday at the age of 79, is not only admired for her beauty and grace but also for her human values and compassion. The online homages pouring in from high-profile celebs to commoners have also shed light on several lesser-known sides of Liz Taylor, including her unique relationship with musicians.

Inspiration to many, a friend to others, Elizabeth Taylor stuck a chord with many celebs for her passion towards several social issues including HIV/AIDS. A strong friendship that grew out of Taylor’s fight against AIDS. was with singer Elton John. Sir Elton John, who in 1993 wrote ‘Candle in the Wind’ in honor of Marilyn Monroe and later in 1997 released another version of the song in memory of Princess Diana, paid a similar musical tribute to “friend” Elizabeth Taylor.

“Today I lost a friend and you lost a hero named Elizabeth Taylor. She was not just a movie star, although she was a huge movie star and there will never be anyone like her again … She was without a doubt one of the greatest people I’ve ever met in my life,” the singer is quoted as saying at the Consol Energy Center. “She supported everybody in that with 1,000% of her body and her fiber. But most of all she loved people. She fought for the underdog. She was an incredible woman and I was privileged to have known her.” “God bless you, Elizabeth. God knows how we’re going to replace you. This is for you and your beautiful memory and for all the people you helped and saved,” he said before going into the song ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’.

Meanwhile, on Twitter, the microblogging site that has lately emerged as the favorite online venue for paying homages among other activities, inadvertently turned grounds for tributes of various kinds: from simple posts to images recalling the captivating actress. Several celebrities tweeted their condolences soon after Liz Taylor’s death to congestive heart failure. While Ricky Martin just posted, “Elizabeth Taylor RIP,” Mariah Carey wrote, “R.I.P. Elizabeth Taylor an incomparable legend who will live forever.”

Interestingly, unique testimonials came from fans of other musicians such as Madonna and Michael Jackson. Photos of Taylor’s encounters with these singers were posted on Twitpic recalling the ways in which the actress reached out to and inspired the complete entertainment world.

>>> On an account, called @mylove4MJ, four photos of Elizabeth Taylor with Michael Jackson were posted. While three of the posts were accompanied by quotes of Michael Jackson on Elizabeth Taylor and vice versa, the fourth was accompanied by lyrics of the song ‘Elizabeth, I Love You,’ composed by the ‘King of Pop’ on the occasion of the actress’ 65th birthday.

MadonnaNation, which claims to be the “biggest and BEST Madonna twitter fanpage,” uploaded a photo of Madonna and Taylor dating back to 1996.

On another account, CurlyKerryLee, photos of the actress with David Bowie appeared. While one image showed Taylor with a cigarette in Bowie’s arms, another captured a “pretty” moment between the actress and the rock star.

Michael Jackson sang “Elizabeth, I Love You”..

February 1997, Michael Jackson was Elizabeth Taylor’s escort at her 65th Birthday celebration. Michael performed a special song he composed specifically for this occasion in honor of his friend Elizabeth. The song is titled “Elizabeth, I Love You” and reflects Michael’s love for her. Michael only performed this song once:

Elizabeth, I love you
(written and composed by Michael Jackson)

Welcome to Hollywood,
that’s what they told you.
A child star in Hollywood,
thats what they sold you.

Grace with beauty, charm and talent,
you would do what you were told
but they robbed you of your childhood,
took your youth and sold it for gold.

Elizabeth, I love you..
you’re every star that shines in the world to me.
Elizabeth, can’t you see that its true..
Elizabeth, I love you,
you’re more than just a star to me.

Lovely Elizabeth,
you have surpassed them all.
My friend Elizabeth,
learned to outlast them all.
Many started back when you did,
lost their way, and now they’re gone
but look at you, a true survivor,
living your life and carrying on.

Elizabeth, I love you,
you’re every star that shines in the world to me.
Elizabeth, can’t you see that its true.
Elizabeth, I love you,
you’re more than just a star.

This is your life, you seem to have it all.
you reached your peak
they wanted you to fall.
It’s very sad, this world can be so bad
But through all the heartaches when they put you down,
you were the victor and you earned the crown.
It’s like walking through fire determined to win,
you were beating life’s battles again and again.

Elizabeth, I love you,
you’re every star that shines in the world to me..
Elizabeth, can’t you see that its true.

Remember the time when I was alone,
you stood by my side and said ‘Let’s be strong’.
You did all these things that only a true friend can do..

Elizabeth, I love you.
The world knows your work now,
of all the things on earth now,
I pray one day I’ll be just like…you.

“I love Elizabeth Taylor. I’m inspired by her bravery. She has been through so much and she is a survivor. That lady has been through a lot and she walked out of it on two feet. I identify with her very strongly because of our experiences as child stars. When we first started talking on the phone, she told me she felt as if she had known me for years. I felt the same way. – Michael Jackson ~♥~

“I pray a lot. When I see a beautiful sunset, I say: ‘God, it’s beautiful, thank You’. Or a baby’s smile or butterfly’s wings or anything like that.”- Michael Jackson
