1985 – “We Are The World”, ATV Song Catalogue
Michael stared in Captain EO, a 3D short film produced by Disney. He visited George Lucas at his Skywalker Ranch and recorded two songs for the project.
- January 15-21:
Michael Jackson & Lionel Richie wrote & composed the song “We Are The World” for famine relief in Ethiopia (Michael is the godfather to Lionel Richie’s daughter Nicole Richie)
- January 22:
Michael went to the Lion Share Recording Studio on Beverly Boulevard with Emmanuel Lewis to record a demo version of “We Are The World” with Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie & Stevie Wonder.
- January 24:
The demo tape of “We Are The World” was sent to all the artists who accepted to take part in the projects.
Michael arrived first at A&M Recording Studio to record a vocal chorus with Quincy Jones. Later 44 other artists joins him directly from the American Music Awards and they spent all night recording. Among the participants are Latoya, Jackie, Randy, Marlon & Tito Jackson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robison, Ray Charles, Bette Midler,Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Spingsteen, Bob Dylan, Dionne Warwick, Harry Belafonte, Bob Geldof, Bonnie Pointer, Billy Joel & Paul Simon.
“Wait” the last single from the Victory album was released by Epic.

Michael arrived in London .
- March 27:
Michael attended the futuristic musical Starlight Express at the Apollo Theater Victoria in London and met the cast backstage.

8,000 fans welcomed Michael at Madame Tussaud’s wax museum where he unveiled his wax model.
- March 29:
Michael visited a London hospital where he saw the skeleton of John Merrick, the Elephant Man. Later, he attended an evening party & reception in his honor, CBS Records presented him with a platinum wall-mounted plaque.
The album and Video cassette of “We Are The World” was released.
Michael & his friend Elizabeth Taylor attended Liza Minnelli’s comeback tour.

- May 10:
Michael visited the Brandywine River Museum ’s exibit of paintings by N.C Wyeth.
- May 14:
Michael received a royalty check from Epic Records for $53 Million for sales from the Thriller album.
Michael rehearsed and filmed the 3D short film Captain EO produced by George Lucas & Francis Ford Coppola. It featured Angelica Huston.
Michael hired Michael Bush & Dennis Tompkins as his personal costume designers.
- July 30:
Michael severely sprained his right hand during the filming of Captain EO. He was treated at the Brotman Memorial Hospital where he also visits with sick fans.
The single Eaten Alive by Diana Ross was released on RCA. The song was recorded in Miami with Michael, Maurice & Barry Gibb.
- Mid August:
After ten months of negotiation, Michael purchased the ATV song catalogue for $47,5 Million. The catalogue comprised of over 4000 compositions includes 251 songs by The Beatles. Michael gave attorneys John Branca & manager Frank Dileo each with a Rolls Royce to thank them in their help in negotiating.
